Historic Attractions

The region’s position, close to the Scotland / England Border and Ireland, has meant that a multitude of historic and religious influences permeate throughout.  Robert Burns, Scotland’s national bard, lived, worked and died in this area.

Fortified positions such as castles are common, and many are open to the public. Caerlaverock Castle often holds historical re-enactments and jousting tournaments during the summer;  Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park, Carronbridge is the family home of the Dukes of Buccleuch.

There are many museums in the region.  Dumfries Museum houses the Camera Obscura, which is one of the oldest working instruments of its type in the world.

Shambellie House presents a fascinating look at fashion and social etiquette from the 1850s to the 1950s.

At Robert Burns’ Ellisland Farm there is the idyllic Burns Walk beside the River Nith north of Dumfries and the Brow Well near Ruthwell, where Burns bathed, is open to the public.
